The niu Fender
Amsterdam
At a unique spot in Amsterdam, alongside the water and in the Cruqiuis area, we’ve developed the niu Fender. This hotel is settled in the newly built Amsterdam City Harbour Hotel (a building we designed, read here). In commission of Novum Hospitality we are designing several the niu hotels in the Netherlands and Germany and the niu Fender is the second the niu hotel to land in the Netherlands.
craft
As with every the niu hotel, the location and its history serve as an inspiration for the interior design concept. The Cruquius area was originally constructed in the 19th century for the expansion of the Port of Amsterdam. Cruquius was a rough area where companies based on craftsmanship, such as metal, paint, enamel and oil, settled down.
Nowadays, the area is transforming into a residential, working and recreational area, while maintaining its robust, industrial character.
The materials we used in the design of the niu Fender tell the story of this industrial history. The robust exposed concrete is a reference to the large warehouses and storage spaces in the area. In addition, the frequent use of wood reminds us of the old docks in the Cruquius harbour. Other elements we used to bring this industrial concept to live are blue steel, steel lattices and mesh.
enamel
Inspired by the local craft businesses, we used classic colours like dark green and yellow ochre. To complete this colour- and material palette, we added glazed materials and surfaces. The enamel companies inspired us to develop unique tiles in collaboration with Mosa; enamel-like tiles that are specifically designed for the niu Fender. The hotel includes a restaurant, bar, cafe & lounge and a meeting room. The concept is implemented in the design of all these areas, as well as the room design. The hotel is more than a getaway for foreigners: it serves both leisure and business purposes with its comfortable furniture, wonderful location and extensive program.
