Marriott Renaissance Schiphol Airport

Aalsmeer

In commission of International Hotel Capital Partners, Mulderblauw made the design for the new-build hotel Renaissance Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. The 250-key hotel is located adjacent to the Amsterdam Forest and as the name alludes, nearby Schiphol Airport.

luxury lifestyle hotel

Renaissance Hotels is a lifestyle brand of the Marriott chain, that focuses on business travellers who are eager to discover local experiences during their stay. Storytelling is key to generate a layered, meaningful and unique stay. The public area includes a destination fine dining restaurant and cocktail bar, various meeting facilities, and a 24-hour gym.

The architectural design features a composition of stepped volumes that builds up to six layers and encloses a central courtyard. The façade is clad with a light mixed coloured masonry, that has a rigid structure and a varied relief. The windows of the hotel rooms are accentuated by brass side panels, decorated with an abstract pattern of leaves. This pattern is a subtle reference to the adjacent Amsterdam Forest.

vivid street

The entrance is emphasized by a double height ceiling, providing an open and welcoming atmosphere. The public areas are visually and physically connected by a ‘street’ where the dropped ceiling adds intimacy to the stretched, open space. Restaurant, bar, reception, meeting facilities and the elevators to the room floors can all be found on this street.

30's typography

To guarantee a unique experience, the following three story lines were determined for the look & feel of the interior:

  • The Amsterdam Forest, constructed in the 1930’s;
  • ‘De Stijl’, an artistic movement that influenced designers world wide with Piet Mondriaan as the most well known artist. 1917 – 1931.
  • ‘De Amsterdam School’ movement, an expressionist architecture style that was popular from 1910 to 1930;

rays of light

Upon entry, guests are embraced by the serene feeling of a walk through the forest. The use of wood and a dark green colour palette combined with brass accents, results in an inviting and serene atmosphere. The mix of the three themes creates an unexpected richness in the interior design. Moreover, the unique design reflects the history and the present of the location resulting in a strong sense of place.

The three themes come to life in finishes, furniture, artwork and lighting. Striking line patterns and intriguing graphic elements are integrated in wallpapers, headboards and artwork. Internal signage, inspired by typography from the 1930’s, guides guests to their desired destination. Random beams of light in the corridors mimic the play of light in a dark forest.
