Old building in a new guise: how we prepare a former cigar factory for the future

tribute to history

The city of Hilversum is proud of its industrial history. One of the neighbourhoods with a variety of historical buildings is the ‘Electrobuurt’. In this area you’ll find a striking building which served as a cigar factory until 1949. Our client challenged us to create a future-proof design for this building. A design with new build elements that do justice to the historical character.

restore

A severe fire in the spring of 2020 seriously damaged parts of the former factory. Between the building parts that have been preserved, we attached a new building that is strongly inspired by the original, historical design.

entrance

The entrance of the complex is situated on this side of the building. Via this entrance you’ll find the healthcare housing and support functions, such as a sports hall and a petit cafe.

flourishing

Want to use the side-entrance? It’s worth it! You’ll find a brand-new green courtyard, as the beating heart of the complex. We made it a ‘generation garden’; a beautiful and public outdoor space, that stimulates encounters between residents and the neighbourhood’s visitors.

Apart from a great view, the plants provide biodiversity and refreshment on warm days. In this courtyard, we built a pavilion which houses a second, small-scale healthcare institution.
